Is there a more harrowing thought than the idea of a horrifically violent act perpetrated by an entirely emotionless person? The brutal beating or killing of an individual by someone who is neither angry or distraught, nor derives pleasure from what they are doing. The act of violence is then simply an act for its own sake, because the person needed to or at least saw no reason not to. In the majority of cases, violence and emotion are inextricably linked. Whether it is an act of rage, vengeance driven by sorrow, or for the sake of enjoyment and pleasure, an emotion can often be identified that is driving the violence.
