Abstract

This unit explores the ways in which art-making practices can enrich and improve the quality of children’s learning experiences and how curricula can be designed to facilitate such practices in schools. It begins with outlining the contribution the arts can make to children’s learning and development. Drawing on a wealth of research, nine often distinctive if not unique benefits are identified. These are likely to resonate with teachers’ lived experiences. Insight is offered into how the arts feature in national curricula. Particular and extensive attention is paid to what ‘arts enriched’ curricula look like, giving examples. In the last sections of the unit, the importance of teacher role-modelling is explored given that teachers play a key role in developing arts-rich practices as important for learning. Consideration is also given to how teachers can engage the support of partners in developing arts-rich learning.
